Character
Protagonist
Ryley Robinson
The player character. A Systems Engineer aboard the Alterra Corporation starship Aurora, who survives the crash-landing on Planet 4546B in Lifepod 5. His primary goal shifts from rescue to surviving and curing his Kharaa infection.
Character
Key NPC
Sea Emperor Leviathan
The oldest living creature on Planet 4546B — over a thousand years old — imprisoned by the Precursor race in the Primary Containment Facility. Communicates telepathically with Ryley. Her eggs produce the Kharaa enzyme that cures the bacterium.
Character
Degasi Survivor
Marguerit Maida
Security officer aboard the Degasi, marooned on 4546B along with the Torgal family. Her PDA logs reveal an increasingly desperate conflict with Paul Torgal over survival strategy. She appears to have survived alone for years deep in the ocean.
Character
Degasi Survivor
Paul Torgal
CEO and owner of the Torgal Corporation and leader of the Degasi expedition. His cautious, surface-focused survival strategy clashed fatally with Marguerit's desire to explore deeper. PDA logs document the deterioration of the group's cohesion.
Character
Degasi Survivor
Bart Torgal
Paul Torgal's son, and the most scientifically-minded of the Degasi survivors. His PDA logs reveal growing fascination with 4546B's biology and his research into Kharaa infection — research that ultimately foreshadowed much of the main story.
Faction
Employer
Alterra Corporation
The galaxy-spanning megacorporation that owns the Aurora and employs Ryley Robinson. Alterra's transmissions arrive intermittently, focusing on liability, property claims, and extraction of Ryley — once he can pay for the rescue. Cold and bureaucratic even in crisis.
Faction
Extinct
Precursor Race (Architects)
The advanced alien civilisation that built the facilities on 4546B, including the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, Primary Containment Facility, and network of Alien Arches. They were attempting to cure Kharaa but were wiped out by the bacterium before completing their work.
Faction
Prior Survivors
Degasi Expedition
A group of three survivors from the Torgal Corporation vessel Degasi, which crashed on 4546B years before the Aurora. Their habitat ruins can be found in the Floating Island, Jellyshroom Caves, and Grand Reef, each logging the group's deterioration.
Event
Story Start
Aurora Crash
The Aurora — a massive Alterra Corporation starship — is shot down by the Quarantine Enforcement Platform while attempting to orbit 4546B. Ryley Robinson survives in Lifepod 5. The Aurora's wreck creates a radiation zone and the Crash Zone biome.
Event
Turning Point
Sunbeam Destruction
The Sunbeam, a small independent trade vessel, responds to Ryley's distress signal and attempts to land at the Floating Island. Before it can land, the Quarantine Enforcement Platform fires on the ship, destroying it in orbit. This is a fixed story event the player cannot prevent.
Event
Core Conflict
Kharaa Outbreak
Thousands of years before the Aurora arrived, the Precursor race accidentally brought Kharaa bacterium to 4546B. The bacterium wiped out 99% of all surface life and the Precursors themselves. The QEP was erected to quarantine the planet and prevent galactic spread.
Precursor
Planet Lock
Quarantine Enforcement Platform
Massive Precursor weapon platform built atop the Mountain Island. Automatically targets and destroys any ship attempting to leave or enter 4546B's orbit. Shot down both the Aurora and the Sunbeam. Disabling it is required to escape the planet.
Precursor
Endgame
Primary Containment Facility
The Precursors' largest installation, built to contain the Sea Emperor Leviathan. Located at approximately 1400m depth in the Active Lava Zone. The Emperor's eggs are incubated here and must be hatched to trigger the release of Enzyme 42 and cure the Kharaa infection.
Precursor
Fast Travel
Alien Arches
Network of Precursor teleportation gates distributed across the planet, providing instant travel between major alien installations. Each arch requires an Ion Cube to activate. The arch network connects the Mountain Island, Lost River, and the PCF.
Biochemistry
Cure
Enzyme 42
The only known cure for Kharaa bacterium, produced naturally by the Sea Emperor Leviathan's hatchlings. When Ryley assists in hatching the Sea Emperor's eggs, the hatchlings release a flood of Enzyme 42 that cures both Ryley and the planet's infected biosphere.
Pathogen
Core Threat
Kharaa Bacterium
A highly contagious alien bacterium that Ryley contracts early in the game. Produces progressive symptoms indicated by the infection tracker in the PDA. Left uncured, it would eventually be fatal — and would be carried off-planet, triggering the QEP's quarantine protocol.
